The new Direct Reduction (DR) plant will prevent the future emission of 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year

COBRA IS, through the Cobra Group (Moncobra), has been selected by the multinational metallurgical company SMS Group to carry out the mechanical and piping assembly of the Direct Reduction (DR) tower that will form part of the new steel production plant that the German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe has located in its complex in Duisburg, Germany.

The new plant will have a production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of Direct Reduction (DR) iron and is designed to run 100% on green hydrogen, marking a significant breakthrough in low-carbon steel production. This innovative Direct Reduction technology will save up to 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

With this project, a decisive step is being taken towards replacing CO2-intensive steel production with environmentally friendly technologies. This plant will be the world’s first hydrogen-ready DR plant and one of the world’s largest industrial decarbonisation projects. This not only contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also positions Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe at the technological cutting edge as a pioneer in the decarbonisation of the steel value chain in Europe.
